Do you know what a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is?

The Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with additional education, advanced knowledge and nursing experience, and a specialty of practice. The NP provides a range of health services to patients and delivers preventative and continuous care towards the clients/ community members. The NP works collaboratively with other medical professionals internally as well as externally. The NP is contracted to HHS and is primarily Island Health.

Some of the support provided by the NP include:

  • Examine the community member (patient) by checking their vitals, review their medical history , evaluate their physical and mental health and consult with physician and other medical HHS staff.
  • They may order laboratory tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Immunize and or vaccinate community members.
  • Advise community members of their health care including health promotions, disease, illness, and accident prevention.
  • Connect members with other health team support such as family physician, therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate patient care in consultation with the community member.
  • Advocate for the community member.
  • Prescribe medications.

The Chiropractor supports by aligning the parts of the musculoskeletal system, stretching muscles, making recommendations to exercise at home and offer other advice or referrals to other medical professionals.

Please consider your clothing attire, depending on the treatment that you require the chiropractor will need to assess the area for swelling, bruising, and may need to access with laser treatment or massage therapy. 

what to expect: 

  • you will need to share your medical history and report your pain or other concerns. 
  • the chiropractor will conduct an evaluation which will be a series of questions about your condition, lifestyle, how your body moves and checking your posture. 
  • adjustments by stretching and massaging the muscles around the area of concern.
  • advise on how to reduce pain with short-term and long-term goals. 
  • recommendations may also include scheduling another appointment with the chiropractor as a follow up.
